At Coundon Court, homework and independent learning is an important opportunity to focus on recall and retrieval practice to secure the knowledge gained during the classroom experience and ensure that knowledge is revisited over time for the purpose of moving into the long term memory. Students may be asked to self-quiz in preparation for lesson quizzes/tests, key words and definition tests, respond to multiple-choice questions, or complete problems or questions to consolidate material learned previously.
The retrieval practice will be designed to focus around the key knowledge students need to know for their current sequence of lessons – or any prior knowledge that needs to be revisited in order for students to make links to the bigger picture of their learning.
The majority of the homework will be marked in class as part of the recall and retrieval activities that take place – or as self or peer assessment and most subject areas will use online platforms to support these activities.
All consequences for poor or incomplete homework are detailed in the Behaviour Policy.

Therefore, the expectation is that Year Key Stage 4 students have, on average, approximately 1 hour of homework per school night. It is expectation that frequency exam style questions will increase as students’ progress through Key Stage 4 and that revision techniques and material will make up a significant amount of Year 11 time towards their examinations. This will be outlined in the Year 11 Countdown plans – this is likely to be at least 2 hours per school night towards the exam season but all students will be supported with revision timetables.
Students are expected to complete 5 hours of independent study per subject per week. Students who take 3 subjects will therefore have approximately 3 hours of homework per night.
